Family Tree – Young

Ancestors of Carolyn Jean Young

Generation 1

  1. Carolyn Jean Young, daughter of Paul William Young and Elizabeth Addie Wooley was born on 31 Dec 1939 in Elyria, Lorain Co, OH. She married James Michael Rebar on 24 Jul 1982 in Columbia, Howard Co, MD. He was born on 23 Sep 1946 in Twin Rocks, Cambria Co, PA. She married Lloyd James Pollock on 12 Sep 1959 in Napoleon, Henry Co, Ohio. He was born on 11 Oct 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Generation 2

  1. Paul William Young, son of William H. Young and Violet Beatrice Brown was born on 18 Nov 1916 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. He died on 19 Mar 1971 in an airplane over Chicago, IL. He married Elizabeth Addie Wooley, daughter of Emmit Merle Wooley and Edna Normanda Rayle on 07 Aug 1936.
  2. Elizabeth Addie Wooley, daughter of Emmit Merle Wooley and Edna Normanda Rayle was born on 29 Nov 1918 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. She died on 13 Aug 2001 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH.

Notes for Paul William Young: On the evening that Paul William Young was born, Edna Normanda (Rayle) Wooley, his future mother-in-law, was walking home with Emmit Wooley, who would marry her. There were lights on in the Young’s house across the street from where they stood. Emmit said, “There must be something going on at Fat Young’s house tonight,” apparently seeing people going in and out. Edna knew that Violet (Brown) Young was giving birth, but was embarrassed to say it because “women’s matters” were not discussed with men in those days. Of course, she could not have known that her first-born, Elizabeth Addie, would someday marry Paul William Young, the baby being born that autumn night.

Paul was the oldest of 3 (Victory and Bob were the other two). About 1917 his father, Wilbur Young, joined the Army and was shipped off to France. While he was in France, his wife, Violet Brown, gave birth to a son, Victory. The child possibly was not Wilbur’s. When their youngest child, Robert, was about 2, Wilbur abandoned the little family, and Violet Brown took the children to Worthington, Ohio, where she worked as a cook at the Methodist Children’s Home. She died a terrible death of uterine cancer in 1931. She was an indigent patient and died alone at age 36 in an attic room in the hospital. Paul was 14 years old. He was passed from relative to relative, one as far away as Newcastle, Pennsylvania. He ran away and returned to Deshler. The story is little sketchy here — Bob and Vic somehow ended up in Deshler with him. Grampy Bill was by this time married for the third time to Maud Tussinger. She refused to take the boys in, so Grampy Bill took them to the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans’ Home in Xenia, Ohio. Just before Paul was sent away, Edna Wooley took care of him for a while, and that’s where he fell in love with Elizabeth. Paul always thought of Edna as a mother, and treated her that way.

Obituary, Deshler Flag, March 25, 1971:

“Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in the Dubbs-Rodenberger Mortuary, Deshler.

“Notes for Elizabeth Addie Wooley:

On August 7, 1996, Elizabeth (Wooley) Young suffered a mild stroke and entered the Oak Grove nursing home, Deshler, Ohio, several days after that.

Generation 3

  1. William H. Young, son of William Howard Young and Laura E. Perry was born on 13 Jul 1898 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. He died on 21 Apr 1930 in Columbus, OH. He married Violet Beatrice Brown, daughter of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk on 08 Nov 1913 in Monroe, MI.
  2. Violet Beatrice Brown, daughter of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 05 Sep 1894 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. She died on 02 Apr 1931 in Columbus, OH.

    Notes for William H. Young:

Wilbur Young was born William H. Young, Jr., according to the official Henry County, Ohio, courthouse birth records, 1891-1921, p. 634, #684 (LDS 0423627). His nickname was Wilbur, obviously so he would not be confused for his father, and he is listed as Wilbur in the 1900 and 1910 census records.

Wilbur Young was also known as ‘Fats.’ In about 1917 he joined the Army and was shipped off to France. While he was in France, his wife, Violet Brown, gave birth to Victory. The child apparently was not Wilbur’s. When Robert was about 2, Wilbur finally left for good, and Violet Brown took the children to Worthington, Ohio, where she worked as a cook at the Methodist Children’s Home. She died in 1931. Wilbur was arrested and charged with non-support, and was jailed at the Ohio State Penitentiary, Columbus, Ohio. He died in prison in a fire in April 1930. The prisoners died because there was no master key to release all the inmates from their cells, and they died from smoke inhalation and burns before the guards could open their cell doors. See newspaper clipping below for a description of this event. Family legend has it that his punishment of time in the State Penitentiary for bigamy, punishment hardly befitting the crime, was because his second wife was the daughter of a sheriff or county judge.

Deshler Flag, April 24, 1930:

“A pall of sadness hovered over the village of Deshler and vicinity on Monday night and Tuesday when it was learned that two of Deshler’s young men had perished in the awful catastrophe at the Ohio State Penitentiary.

“The two young men, Samuel Aldrich and Wilbur D. Young were both reported as having been burned to death during the fire and friends and relatives alike anxiously awaited more definite information.

“Early on Tuesday morning Wm. Young received a positive message from Columbus stating that his son had perished in the fire but no word to that effect had as yet been received by the Aldrich people. Early Tuesday morning at 2:45 to be exact a message had been sent to Bob Aldrich and signed by his brother Sam stated that he was alright and for them not to worry. Another message dispatched 21 minutes later stated that he was still O. K. but the message was unsigned. As no further word was received Bob Aldrich went to Columbus on Tuesday in the hope of getting more definite information. He was able to get in communication with the office of governor Cooper where he was informed that his brother Sam was still living and that he had not been in the fire. He was unable, however, to get to see his brother. On returning to Deshler, the Toledo papers carrying the announcement that he was among the dead caused Bob to believe that probably there was some mistake and he wired the office of Warden Thomas who replied that Sam Aldrich had not been in the fire and that he was O. K. A long distance call to Orrin Bailey who is an official on the Penitentiary staff also disclosed information that Sam Aldrich had not perished and that he had not been in the fire. And so as we go to press we do so with the hope that this information was true and that he at least had been spared from the awful fate that overtook the other Deshler boy and so many of the other inmates. Sam had many friends around Deshler who are glad to learn of this.

“However, fate was not kind to Wilbur Young and he lost his life, while still a young man, within the gray walls of the institution in a most horrible manner. Trapped in his cell like a wild beast with no hope of release he could see the flames, smoke and heat creep closer and closer while all he could do was to wait and do nothing but still wait. Convict though he was, and the rest may be or rather may have been, yet withal there beat in his breast a human heart with human feelings and a heart that could love those near and dear to him and be loved in turn and it casts a pall of gloom and sorrow over those who knew him to think of the awful manner of his ending.

“Mr. Young and Funeral director Rader took the ambulance to Columbus on Tuesday afternoon with the expectation of bringing the body back but were informed that no bodies would be released until 9 o’clock on Wednesday morning. They were also told that the body would be furnished with a shroud, color and tie and a coffin, and that transportation charges would be prepaid to its destination. Just when the body will arrive in Deshler and when the funeral service will be held is not at this time known.”

Notes for Violet Beatrice Brown:

Violet Brown’s birth information, and data on her parents’ names, are from the official Henry County, Ohio, courthouse birth records, 1891-1921, p. 32, #100 (LDS 0423627).

Violet Brown’s husband, Wilbur Young, left her and the kids. She took the children to Worthington, Ohio, where she worked as a cook at the Methodist Children’s Home. She died in 1931, of uterine cancer, when Paul was 14. She is buried in Deshler cemetery. In the mid-1980s, Carolyn and I visited Emmit Wooley, and he took us to the cemetery. After much searching, we found Violet’s flat stone in front of the mausoleum.

I returned to the Deshler Cemetery (Woodlawn) in August 1996 to get photographs of the headstone. Since Violet’s is flush with the ground, it was overgrown with crabgrass and I could not find it easily. Her date of birth on the headstone is 1895, which is at odds with the official records.

Obituary in Deshler Flag, April 9, 1931:

“As the wheels of time revolve, we find as the mist clears away that the great reaper has again visited the world and called away another familiar face, that of Mrs. Violet Young of Columbus, O., quite well known in Deshler.

“Violet Beatrice Young (nee Brown), daughter of Edward and Flora Brown, was born on September 5, 1895 and departed this life at Columbus, O., April 2, 1931, at the age of 35 years, 6 months and 27 days. She was born at Deshler and spent her early life in this community where she was well-known. She was converted when only a child in the United Brethren Church, to which she was a very faithful attendant. The church being the first in her life and service, she was also a very faithful worker in the Christian Endeavor. To these she was faithful while residing in Deshler.

“On November 8, 1913, at Monroe, Michigan, she was united in marriage to Mr. Wilbur Young, also of Deshler. Three children were born, who are as follows: Paul, Victory and Robert.
“Mrs. Young had been a great sufferer for the past few months, and at the tolling of the gong, the curtain closed on the life of a young mother and loved one. She passed away at the hospital in Columbus.
“Her husband passed away a little over a year ago. She leaves to mourn their loss the above mentioned sons, Paul, Victory and Robert, also two brothers, one sister, one aunt and four uncles besides a host of other relatives and good friends. Her parents have passed to the other shore to await her coming. To say that her cheery face will be missed is only placing it lightly, but our loss is her gain.
“The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Deshler U. B. Church, Rev. P. W. Lutz officiating. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery.”

Notes for Evelyn Ruth Wooley:

Henry County, Ohio, birth records, 1891-1900.

Received a call today from Janet (Seislove) Holdgreve informing us that Evelyn had passed away at about 4:30 a.m. yesterday (3 September 2000). Janet, and later Rich Seislove, said that Evelyn had a bad night a few days ago, and the Hospice nurse doubled her pain killer, and Evelyn was barely conscious after that, although all present felt that she could hear and understand what was said to her. She had pancreatic cancer, and her passing was not unexpected.

Death Notes: Pancreatic cancer

According to anecdotal information, Ester was pronounced dead, but revived and lived 2 weeks longer. She reported a weird ‘near-death’ experience at a time when the phenomenon was not recognized as a valid event.

Generation 4

  1. William Howard Young, son of Henry S. Young and Mary Elizabeth Shultz was born on 01 May 1871 in Champaign Co, OH. He died on 18 Oct 1960 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. He married Laura E. Perry, daughter of Lucius H. Perry and Sarah A. Baldwin about 1894 in Ohio.
  2. Laura E. Perry, daughter of Lucius H. Perry and Sarah A. Baldwin was born on 25 Feb 1875 in Hancock Co, OH. She died on 04 Apr 1914 in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH.

    Notes for William Howard Young:

Information relating to date/place of birth, and all data pertaining to the marriage between William Henry Young and Bertha A. Rosendale Ribling are from: Certified marriage certificate #3384, dated 3 August 1915, Probate Court, Henry County, Ohio. On this certificate, William H. Young was listed as being 43 years of age on May 1, 1915, which puts his DOB at May 1, 1872. Elizabeth Addie Wooley Young has information (seemingly well-researched) that he was born on May 1, 1871 instead. Elizabeth’s information has proved to be more accurate in other cases. Furthermore, in the 1900 census, his DOB was given as May 1871.
William Henry Young was known as ‘Grampy Bill.’ He was the Deshler town marshall, and he rode a bicycle his entire life as his mode of transportation. He was an inveterate cigar-smoker. According to family legend, he was born and raised in, and eventually died in, the same house as his parents, Henry S. and Mary Elizabeth Schultz Young. The house has since been razed. The 1900 census records list Henry S. Young as living on Elm Street, Deshler, and William Henry Young as living on Maple Street.

Obituary, Deshler Flag, October 20, 1960:

Death Notes: Carcinoma

Notes for Laura E. Perry:

Note: the Laura Young who is buried in Deshler cemetery, near the Mausoleum, is NOT Laura E. (Perry) Young.
Little is known about Laura Perry, except that in mid-life she became mentally disturbed. She is rumored to have tried to kill her husband with a large knife. She was committed to the Toledo State Hospital in late March 1914 and died there several days later.
According to the Ohio Historical Society on-line death certificate index, a Laura E. Young died on April 14, 1914, in Lucas County (Vol. 1349, Certificate 23335, Code 48).

Excerpts from Criminal Docket 2, Case 404, p. 266, Lunacy of Laura A. [sic] Young, filed February 27, 1904, Fin(al) Record Lun(acy) 2, p. 216:

  2. Flora A. M. Burk, daughter of James Burk and Nancy Ann Gibson was born about 1873 in Ohio. She died on 27 Jun 1919 in Henry Co, OH.

    Notes for Edward F. Brown:

Information relating to the marriage of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk is from the official marriage record, p. 43, filed in the Henry County, Ohio, courthouse, on December 19, 1890. Flora (known as “Mattie”) was 17 years old, and it is assumed that the James Burk who applied for the marriage license was her father.
Headstone information recorded in August 1996. His date of birth was computed from the inscription, which reads, “Edward F. Brown, Died Nov. 24, 1909, Aged 38 Y. 9 M. 22 D.” I did not see a headstone for his wife, Flora A.M. “Mattie” Burk, nearby.
On the marriage record, James Burk swore that Edward F. Brown was at least 21 years old, which places his birth no later than 1869, unless James Burk was not telling the truth on the marriage record. Please note that there is some information circulating around that gives Edward F. Brown’s parents as Hester Ann (Camomile) and David C. Brown, but in fact Edward was the younger brother of David

Deshler Flag obituary, December 3, 1909:

“Edward Foster Brown was born in Shelby county, near Jackson Center, Ohio, Feb. 2, 1871. He moved with his parents to Deshler in 1887, where he resided until his death, which occurred Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1909, of a disease of the jaw, age 38 years, 9 months and 22 days.

“He united with the M. E. church about twenty years ago.

“He was united in marriage to Flora Burk in 1890 at Deshler. To this union were born three girls and one boy, all of whom still survive, except one girl which passed away three years ago. A widow, two daughters and one son are left to mourn the loss of a loving and devoted husband and father. He also leaves two brothers, one residing in this place and one in Arkansas, also three sisters, two of whom reside in this place and one in Hamilton, besides a host of friends.

“The funeral was held at the M. E. church conducted by Rev. Rainsberger. The remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn cemetery.”

Please note: Flora (Burk) Brown was pregnant when Edward Brown died, and this was not reflected in the obituary.

Notes for Flora A. M. Burk:

Information relating to the marriage of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk is from the official marriage record, p. 43, filed in the Henry County, Ohio, courthouse, on December 19, 1890. Flora (known as “Mattie”) was 17 years old, and it is assumed that the James Burk who applied for the marriage license was her father.

Farmers Directory, Henry County, 1916:

“Flora A. Brown, 4 children, owns home, 1 acre, R.R. #2, Deshler, Bartlow Township”

I find it to be rather odd that Flora (Burk) Brown is not buried near her husband, Edward F. Brown, unless she re-married and is buried with her second husband.

Flora A. M. Burk and Edward F. Brown had the following children:

  1. i. Violet Beatrice Brown, daughter of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 05 Sep 1894 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. She died on 02 Apr 1931 in Columbus, OH. She married William H. Young, son of William Howard Young and Laura E. Perry on 08 Nov 1913 in Monroe, MI. He was born on 13 Jul 1898 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. He died on 21 Apr 1930 in Columbus, OH.

ii. Maudal Marie Brown, daughter of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 13 Jul 1897. She died on 20 Jul 1906 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH.

iii. Ruth O. Brown, daughter of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 28 Sep 1903 in Bartlow Twp, Henry Co, OH.

iv. Darrell E. Brown, son of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 25 Oct 1907 in Bartlow Twp, Henry Co, OH.

v. Carl Brown, son of Edward F. Brown and Flora A. M. Burk was born on 23 Dec 1909 in Bartlow Twp, Henry Co, OH.

Notes for Carl Brown:

In the official Henry County, Ohio, birth records, no first name is given for this child. His name is taken from the 1910 census records.

  1. Richard Wooley was born about 1860. He married Addie Etoile Patterson, daughter of James M. Patterson and Samantha Gilmore on 29 Jun 1882 in Henry Co, OH.
  2. Addie Etoile Patterson, daughter of James M. Patterson and Samantha Gilmore was born on 05 May 1860 in Napoleon, Henry Co, Ohio. She died on 16 May 1926 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH.

    Notes for Richard Wooley:

Information on marriage of Richard Wooley and Addie E. Patterson is from Henry County marriage records, Vol. 5, 1882-1886 (LDS 0423621).
According to family legend, Richard Wooley got on a train about 28 March 1896 and “went West.” He never returned. Emmit was less than a month old! Richard’s wife, Addie, and her 5 children (Edward, Elverdie, Charles, Lester, and Emmit) went to live with her parents, James and Samantha Gilmore Patterson. In the 1900 census, Addie (noted as Adda by the enumerator) was listed as a widow. I cannot find any more information on Richard Wooley in Ohio, leading me to suspect that he emigrated to there from another state.

    Notes for Addie Etoile Patterson:

Information on marriage of Richard Wooley and Addie E. Patterson is from Henry County marriage records, Vol. 5, p. 4, 1882-1886 (LDS 0423621).
When her husband, Richard Wooley, left her and the children on 28 March 1896 to “go West,” Addie and the 5 children went to live with her parents, James and Samantha Gilmore Patterson. Addie became a domestic and laundress to support the family.
Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler, OH, Section B, Row 1, Grave 10.

Obituary, Deshler Flag, May 20, 1926:
Addie Wooley is Gone to Reward
Deshler Resident for Half Century Called at Son’s Home Last Sunday
“Mrs. Addie E. Wooley, a resident of Deshler for over a half century, was called to her reward at the home of her son Emmett (sic) on Stearns avenue, last Sunday, after being ill and bedfast most of the time since October. Mrs. Wooley had made her home with her son, Emmett since his marriage, over nine years ago. Prior to that time, Mrs. Wooley and son resided with her mother, Mrs. Patterson. In the home of her son, Mrs. Wooley received every attention and care that loving hands could administer and loving hearts and thoughtful minds could conceive. But just before the sun had reached its zenith on Sunday, the life work of Mrs. Wooley came to a close, peacefully the soul took its flight to its Creator, the record book of her life was closed, and her life of usefulness to her children and to the community was finished; hers the reward awaiting those who are [text ends].
“The melancholy days of this life are sometimes of the autumn, brown and sear, with the rustle of the eddying gust and with meadow and woodland apparently barren and void. And sometimes, the days of sadness steal in upon us, in the flowering springtime, when all nature is wondrously clad in a mantle of living green.
“So, it is at this time of vernal sunshine, that the great chronometer of this life has marked the hour for the passing of another of Deshler’s most highly respected citizens and one of its most highly honored mothers.
“Addie E. Patterson, daughter of James M. and Samantha Patterson, was born at Napoleon, Ohio, May 5th, 1860, and departed this life, at the home of her son, Emmit, May 16th, 1926, aged 66 years and 11 days.
“She came with her parents to Deshler, when she was a girl of fifteen years, and has been a resident of this place, continuously since that time. Thus, she has been associated with the history of this little city, for more than a half-century.
“She was united in marriage to Richard Wooley, June29th, 1882, and to this union were born five children.
“And, in her departure, she has to mourn their loss, two sons, Emmit and Lester, of this city, one daughter, Mrs. Verda Rossbach of Saginaw, Michigan, and eleven grand-children.
And, besides these she has left many other relatives, friends and neighbors, who fully realize that an honored pioneer, and a kindly mother and friend has beckoned a final adieu to all the receding scenes of time. Her part in the great drama of life has been completed, and has passed on the realm of the infinite ages. The token of her kindly life will be deeply engraved upon memory’s tablet, as time goes cycling away.
“Funeral services at the Deshler M. E. Church and conducted by the pastor in charge, Rev. E. I. Arthur; Morticians Rader and Spangler.
“Interment in the ‘Silent City of the Dead,’ at beautiful Woodlawn, near Deshler.”

When Addie re-married to Albert Long in 1906, she listed Shelby County as her place of birth, and she listed her mother’s maiden name as Samantha Madison.

Addie Etoile Patterson and Richard Wooley had the following children:

i. Verda Wooley, daughter of Richard Wooley and Addie Etoile Patterson was born in Sep 1884 in Deshler, Henry Co, OH. She died in Jul 1964 in Toledo, OH. She married Joseph A. Rossbach. She married Leonard Crawford. He was born on 29 Nov 1882 in Van Buren, Seneca Co, OH. He died on 29 Jul 1939 in Ypsilanti, MI.

Notes for Verda Wooley:

Obituary, newspaper unknown, July 1964:
“Mrs. Verda Rossbach, 78, of 2251 Putnam St., died Wednesday in Maumee Valley Hospital.
“Born in Deshler, O., Mrs. Rossbach lived in Detroit most of her life, moving to Toledo six years ago to enter the Quillan Nursing Home.
“Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Jane Oaks, Maumee; son, Jack Crawford, Detroit; brothers, Emmett Wooley, Napoleon, and Lester Wooley, Deshler; two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
“Services will be in the Maison-Dardenne Mortuary tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with burial in White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Detroit.”

Carolyn Young Rebar, March 27, 2007: I remember Verda. She was a big woman, buxom. She lived in Michigan and would come down to Toledo to visit Mam Mam and Granddaddy [Emmett and Edna Rayle Wooley]. She was very nice. Her daughter, Jane, was a little spoiled. Freeland was a sickly person. Uncle Joe and Aunt Verda came to Toledo often. She and Mam Mam would talk and talk. They would drive down and return the same day. Aunt Verda always had nice clothes, suits, things that were fur-lined. She was more ‘city’ than Mam Mam, but they loved to get together. Uncle Joe died first, suddenly I think, but I’m not sure.

“The body of the deceased will be removed to Columbus for cremation following services at the funeral home.”

Date of birth is from R. D. Certificate No. 379169, provided by Lesa (Fenning) Duncan. The certificate is a work history of Edward’s employment with the railroad. This document also details that he worked for the B&O Railroad from 1910 to 1925 as a freight brakeman, then freight conductor in the Chicago division (Tiffin, Ohio), then a trackman in the Deshler division. He sued the railroad twice for injuries received on the job in 1921 and settled for $2,500 in 1923 and was dismissed.

According to Lesa (Fenning) Duncan, he moved with his family after his dismissal from the railroad and became a pressman at the Lansing State Journal, possibly through the intervention of his brother-in-law. Through 1945 and 1946 he had health problems and eventually moved in with his niece Elizabeth Redd in Loudonville, Ohio. He lived there seven months before dying. By this time all his children had left home and his wife had started working as a maid at the Hotel Olds in Lansing, Michigan. At his death, she went into service as a cook/housekeeper.

Notes for Nellie Doretha Killen:

According to Lesa (Fenning) Duncan, Nell started working as a maid at the Hotel Olds in Lansing, Michigan, to support herself and her husband, Edward. Edward was blind for about two years before dying in 1948. Nell’s salary at the hotel was $11.04 a week. After Edward’s death, Nell went on to work as a cook/housekeeper in various parts of the country. She showed Lesa her reference letters, which she was very proud of. She was able to work all over the country and was particularly taken with Arizona and New Mexico. After her daughter’s (Donna Jean) divorce, Nell went to live with her and help raise Lesa and and Lesa’s sister (name not known). Nell was very friendly, sociable, and outgoing, loving to entertain visitors.

  3. Elizabeth Ellen Stevens, daughter of Elisha S. Stevens and Sarah Ellen Holford was born on 06 Jun 1875 in Ohio, poss Defiance. She died on 09 Apr 1913 in Deshler, Henry Co, Ohio.

    Notes for Perry Arthur Rayle:

Information on date of birth, place of birth, and all information related to marriage to Lorena Stevens, is from Certified Marriage Certificate #3671, dated 8 February 1917, Probate Court, Henry County, Ohio, p. 336 (LDS 0423624). This marriage certificate states that Perry was 44 years old on 31 January 1916, which means that he would have been born 31 January 1872. However, his birth certificate clearly gives his birth date as January 31, 1873 (Record of Births, Probate Court, in and for Pleasant Township, Henry County, State of Ohio, 1874, p. 63, LDS 0423626). Beware of the math on the marriage certificates!

Perry Rayle’s occupation on the February 1917 marriage certificate is given as ‘farmer,’ while in the 1910 census, his occupation was given as ‘Saloon Keeper.’ The latter fact was confirmed by Elizabeth Addie Wooley Young, his granddaughter.

Obituary, Deshler Flag, March 24, 1921:
“Perry Arthur Rayle, son of Henry and Caroline Rayle, was born near Hamler, Ohio, Jan. 31, 1873 and departed from this life March 16, 1921, aged 48 years, 1 month and 16 days. “He leaves to mourn his loss four daughters, Mrs. Harvey Fox of Pleasant Bend, Ohio; Mrs. Roy Rutter, Mrs. Emmit Wooley and Mrs. Albert Leveck, all of Deshler; two sons Bennie and Robert, two brothers and many other relatives and friends.”

Death Notes: Nephritis

Notes for Elizabeth Ellen Stevens:

See Perry Arthur Rayle’s record for source information pertaining to his second marriage to Lorena Stevens. On that certificate, Lorena gave her place of birth as Highland County, Ohio, so it is possible that Elizabeth Ellen was also born there. On that document, Lorena spelled her mother’s family name as ‘Alford’. By 1880, Elisha and Sarah Stevens were living in Putnam County.
According to family lore, when Elizabeth Ellen Stevens died (of uterine cancer), her sister, Lorena (called ‘Reen’ by family members) moved in with Perry to help care for the children. Lorena was “more” than that, and she was also not very nice to the children. Lorena eventually married Perry in February 1917, and when she did, she took all of Elizabeth Ellen’s possessions (furniture, jewelry, clothes), leaving nothing for the children.
